It is hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us! We have had a superb week in Class 4 enjoying the full breadth of the curriculum. In Maths, we have consolidated our understanding of long division and begun applying this to multi-step word problems using the RUCSAC problem solving mnemonic. In English, we published our letters to Otto Frank and have been learning about characterisation through dialogue. Using the context of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, we have been writing passages of dialogue using the punctuation rules that we created for writing speech. I have been particulary impressed with the inclusion of action beats to allow the reader to infer details of how something was said and the feelings of the characters.

In Science, we explored how the earth rotates on its axis and this creates night and day. We also noted that the tilt of the earth leads to the seasons as at certain points of the year the Northernn Hemisphere is leaning towards the sun and at other times, away.

In Art, we have been using water colours to paint cards for the community which will be handed out by our year 6 next week.

In History, we have been exploring the evacuation journeys that children had during the war and how this affected their lives. To this we marked on a map of England the major cities, where children were evacuated from, and the safe rural areas where the host families lived. Then, we created letters from the perspective of evacuees outlining the steps they went through to get to their billets.
