It has been a tremendous first week back with our new class. We began the week by creating, and agreeing to, a class charter that we will follow for the rest of the year. It enables us to do all the things required to be the best role models for the rest of the school.
In mathematics, we have been deepening our understanding of place value. This involves recognising the value of digits in numbers up to a million. It also involved us reading and writing numbers, remembering to include hyphens and commas in the appropriate places.
In English, the whole school has been focusing on Flotsam by David Wiesner. We have practiced our retrieval skills and inferences by looking the pictures in detail and questioning why the author included specific details. The next day, we applied the idea of pictures representing events by relating this to how we demonstrated the school values over the Summer holidays. On Wednesday, we created an acrostic poem based on Flotsam. Thursday involved making our own version of 'Flotsam 2' through pictures and short sentences. To end the week, we looked at how the concept of resilience seen in Flotsam can apply to the year ahead through freeze frames and drama-led learning to develop our oracy skills.
In the afternoons, we have been designing our class version of The Big Frieze by Emma Yarlett. We begun our PE topic of Health-related exercise. In PSHE, we looked at first aid and what is meant by a primary survey (DR ABC). On Friday, we did STEM related learning by working in small groups to create bridges from toothpicks and plasticine. It was fantastic to see how well each group resolved the challenges they faced and came to a fair decision when opposing ideas were suggested.
I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful weekend ahead and arrive ready to learn on Monday morning!
