It has been absolutely wonderful to welcome the children back to school after the holidays! The classroom and playground has been buzzing with excitement as everyone caught up with their friends and shared all the fantastic things they got up to during the break. We have hit the ground running, and the children have brought an incredible amount of energy and curiosity to their learning this week. Here is a look at what we have been up to! This week, we dipped our toes into the abstract world of time. We have started learning how to tell the time using analogue clocks, focusing closely on o'clock, half past, and quarter past times.

A Note for Home: Telling the time is notoriously tricky for young learners! It would be incredibly helpful if you could reinforce this at home. Pointing out the clock at snack time, bedtime, or when leaving the house will really help seal this concept.

In our English lessons, the children completed their 'Big Writes' centered around the beautiful book Grandad’s Island. We were blown away by the spectacular descriptive language the children chose to use to bring their settings and characters to life. Future authors in the making! Our Geography work took us on a whirlwind adventure across the globe. We reviewed the different continents and put our map skills to the test by following two friends on their travels as they navigated the world to visit one another. In RE, our new topic is all about celebrations. We had some lovely, thoughtful class discussions about the different types of celebrations observed around the world, and the children proudly shared what their own personal favourite celebrations are and why. Year 2 had an absolutely fantastic time exploring, acting, and investigating in our outside learning area this week. They proved themselves to be exceptional scientists and team players across two action-packed days. Our first task on Thursday was to step outside and observe just how much our outside learning area has changed since our last visit. The children put on their 'Nature Detective' hats and noticed some beautiful signs of seasonal growth. After our walk, we recapped our science learning about food chains with a game of Animal Actors. Split into secret groups, the children had to use body language and movement—with a strict ‘no words’ rule—to help the rest of the class guess their animal. Once the animal was successfully guessed, the class had to correctly categorise it as a predator, prey, or consumer. The dramatic flair on display was brilliant! On Friday, we shifted our focus to the creatures that help or hinder our gardens, introducing the concepts of Garden Guardians and Garden Pests. We heard some super scientific vocabulary and fantastic reasoning. The children gave brilliant explanations for their choices, such as why a ladybird is a brilliant guardian because it eats aphids. What a sensational start to the new term. Well done for a hard-working and joyful week, Year 2! Have a wonderful, restful weekend, everyone!
